SILENCE IN SOLITUDE

Located on the campus of University of Illinois, Silence in Solitude is a memorial to the causalities of global wars and an area of refuge and space for reflection. Silence in Solitude’s design uses planar forms of expression and materiality to “paint” across the site and provide diverse architectural elements that create tension and relief as they intersect or are juxtaposed next to each other.

Each architectural expression is a planar surface that is disconnected, broken, or manipulated to provide an aggressive language that is soften by the juxtaposition or proximity to each other and the main reflecting pool. The pool provides a visual mirroring of its surroundings and is the unifying element that connects all the formal expressions of the memorial.
